DuPont™ Styrofoam™ Brand Ultra SL XPS Insulation

High R-Value, Moisture-Resistant Insulation with Shiplap Edges U.S.
HFC Compliant Formulation
DuPont™ Styrofoam™ Brand Ultra SL Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Insulation is a moisture-resistant, durable and lightweight extruded polystyrene foam board with shiplap edges designed specifically to be used as a continuous insulation (ci) and installed over block, concrete or metal stud backup behind masonry or stone veneers.

Manufactured with a patented carbon-black technology, Styrofoam™ Brand Ultra SL XPS Insulation features an R-value of 5.6 per inch (RSI of 0.97 per 25 mm), the highest of all extruded polystyrene foam insulation products. With its closed-cell structure offering advanced long-term thermal performance and moisture control, Styrofoam™ Brand Ultra SL with shiplap edges maximizes the performance of the entire wall assembly.

Styrofoam™ Brand Ultra SL XPS Insulation — when tested with LiquidArmor™ Flashing & Sealant over joints, penetrations and transitions — complies with ASTM E2357 Assembly Air Barrier tests. It is also an approved air barrier assembly by the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) and passes ASTM E331 Water Penetration and ASTM E2178 Air Permeance testing.

1Values are consistent with the criteria of ASTM C578 and the requirements of the FTC R-value rule (16 CFR Part 460). R means resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.

2Vertical compressive strength is measured at 10 percent deformation or at yield, whichever occurs first. Since Styrofoam™ Brand Extruded Polystyrene Foam Insulations are visco-elastic materials, adequate design safety factors should be used to prevent long-term creep and fatigue deformation.

3Based on 1” thickness.

FAQ

Does the 48 inch wide DuPont™ Styrofoam™ Brand Ultra SL XPS Insulation have to be installed vertically over block in the Ultra Air Barrier Wall System?
No. The vertical application method of the 48 inch wide Styrofoam™ Brand Ultra SL Insulation over a block wall is the most efficient, but there are some exceptions to this. Either way is acceptable, but we show the most common method used here. Block Application For more information on the Ultra Air Barrier Wall System see: Ultra Air Barrier Wall System
Does the DuPont™ Styrofoam™ Brand Ultra SL XPS Insulation have to be installed horizontally over steel studs in the Ultra Air Barrier Wall System?
No. The horizontal application method for Styrofoam™ Ultra SL Insulation is most efficient for over steel studs, but there are some exceptions to this. Either way is acceptable, but we show the most common method used here. Foundation Wall For more information on the Ultra Air Barrier Wall System see: Ultra Air Barrier Wall System
Is drywall necessary when installing DuPont™ Styrofoam™ Brand Ultra SL XPS Insulation over steel studs in the Ultra Air Barrier Wall System?
No. In general, the use of gypsum drywall on the exterior side of the steel studs is not necessary for a successful application of Styrofoam™ BrandUltra SL Insulation in the Ultra Air Barrier Wall System. However, there are some situations where this may not be true, especially where an hourly rated fire wall is required.
